WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is the art of leading someone into a trance state and then using the imagination to create experiences that are helpful for the client to overcome problematic issues. In the trance state, the subconscious can be offered new alternatives for behaviour and reality.

Since 2006, hypnosis has been recognized as a scientifically based method by the german "Scientific Advisory Board on Psychotherapy". Research suggests that in many ways the unconscious does not differentiate between vividly imagined and actually experienced situations, at least with regard to the effect of these imaginations. Thus, the effect-related work with the unconscious is the focus of hypnosis.

As a certified hypnotherapist, I can tell you that trance itself is a natural, and often occurring, relaxed state of mind.

CAN EVERYONE BE HYPNOTIZED?

Basically: If you are able to imagine something, a color, a smell or the feeling of a certain surface, then you are capable of inner perception and you can be hypnotized. It doesn't matter how good you are at it.

Maybe you're very good at imagining things, maybe not so good. Maybe you only see outlines, like me. It doesn't matter how good you are at it. Much more important is the situation, the situational suggestibility. The trusting relationship between client and therapist is the most important element for the success of the session.

The most important requirement, however, is: You have to want it. Nobody can hypnotize you against your will.

WILL HYPNOSIS WORK FOR ME?

If you allow it! Nobody can hypnotize you against your will. (see next point)
On the other hand, no willpower is required for the effects of hypnosis to unfold. Because in hypnosis we work with the unconscious!

In hypnosis we often speak about different trance depths. But hypnotic depth is a subjective experience. It is just a construct that does not say much about the concrete effect on the individual.

DO I HAVE CONTROL OVER MY MIND AND BODY DURING HYPNOSIS?

Yes, anytime. It's like in the cinema. If you like the story and you allow it, you will dive into the film and experience it. In the curves of a car race you lean into your seat, in sad moments you might grab the hand of your companion or get a few tears in your eyes. Although you know that the film is only flickering light on the screen, you and your unconscious experience the emotions as if it were real. And yet, if the fire alarm of the cinema went off at that moment, you would always be able to jump up and act immediately. So, if something happens that contradicts your values ​​or your ethics, you will always notice and be protected. The effect that can be observed here is more likely to be described using the word attention absorption. At best, like in a movie, your attention is absorbed by the voice of the narrator (hypnotist).

Yes, anytime. You don't give up your will at the door. On the contrary, you are fully conscious throughout the session and your mind can decide at any time which suggestion it would like to accept and which not. Indeed, working with hypnosis is teamwork. It is comparable to the relationship between athletes and coaches. The trainer knows exactly what to do and provides guidance. The athlete has to run the marathon himself. And together, great changes can be initiated.

DO I SLEEP DURING HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is not sleep. Although hypnosis is named after the Greek god Hypnos, hypnosis is not sleep. You are fully conscious throughout the session and in a trance state in which the way your brain works changes.
The son of the Greek god Hypnos is Morpheus, the god of dreams. And this is a very nice indication of how working with the hypnotic trance can work.

 

In the spirit of Milton Erikson's indirect style, personalized dream journeys are often created, which are intended to trigger processes in the clients mind by means of their metaphors and their indirect suggestions. The inner perception and imagination changes these unconscious processes and thus reality.  

It is important that you understand that you are not asleep during a hypnosis session. However, due to the relaxing effect of the hypnosis induction at the beginning, you may easily fall asleep. However, this sleep is no different from ordinary sleep and it is not useful for the session. If I notice anything like this in the session, I will wake you up immediately so that we can continue our processes.

CONTRAINDICATIONS - WHO SHOULDN'T BE HYPNOTIZED?

  • People who are under the influence of alcohol, drugs and / or medication.

  • People with organic brain impairments.

  • People with a weak heart.

  • People with any kind of dementia.

  • People with current, severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or psychosis.
