WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Often people ask, if depression is mental or physical. We need to look on depression from a holistic perspective. This means, we need to look at all the possible root causes and interdependencies. Depression has a neurobiological side and a psychosocial side. These sides are not excluding each other, they are complementary. Nevertheless, when the root causes of the manifestation are on the psychosocial side, hypnosis can help!
A. Neurobiological Aspects:
- Genetic factors
- Changes in the stress hormone axis
- Imbalance of messenger substances
B. Psychosocial Aspects:
- Traumatic experiences of any kind
- Experiences of loss, chronic overload
- Loss of happiness and hope
As a hypnotherapist, my work is focussed on the psychosocial aspects of depression.
Depression, as well as burn-out, can both be understood as an unconscious refusal to continue in life as we did before. We want to go on, but our subconscious won't let us. The background of this refusal is the deep belief that nothing will change, despite all effort that we put in. Depression clients lack the experience of competence that their actions and decisions determine how they feel. They rather have the impression that no matter what they does, it does not achieve anything.
Hypnosis therapy can help clients to experience their competence and their self-efficacy. With hypnotherapy we are not only able to resolve negative emotions, we also can create positive resources.
